Quinta do Infantada
This small, family-owned quinta near Pinhao has been growing grapes for port wines for nearly 200 years and making its own port for more than two decades. More recently, likely many of the Douro port companies, it has started producing the full, elegant reds for which the region is being praised for. Its 2007 vintage red won a gold medal at the international wine challenge. The grapes for both port and wine are crushed by foot in traditional lagares after being picked by hand on the steep terraced slopes which tumble down to the Douro river around Gontelho. Port is made by adding grape spirit to wine that is high in sugar because fermentation has been stopped after just a few days (compared to 20+ for normal wine).po
