Te Mata Estate
Te Mata Estate produces some of the very best red wines in New Zealand. At Vinexpo 93, France’s prestigious wine show, Te Mata’s 2000 vintage Coleraine was chosen as one of the top 10 wines in the world, putting it in the same league as Chateau Lafite Rothschild and California’s legendary Opus One. Robert Parker gives it 91+ and other wine experts have rated it at 98. Wine has been produced on the Te Mata Estate in Hawkes Bay for more than 100 years, making it New Zealand’s oldest still functioning winery. Hawkes Bay is the same latitude as Madrid and has a slightly warmer and drier climate. The winery is owned and managed by John Buck and his family. John is one of the great names of New Zealand winemaking, a visionary who against much skepticism has proved that New Zealand can make reds as good as the very best Bordeaux.
