Kanonkop Estate
This estate in Slellenbosch put Pinotage, South Africa’s very own grape, on the world map. At a time when it was grown mainly for bulk wines Beyers Truter showed that it could produce complex, elegant wines with a style of their own. More than 60 per cent of the estate’s Pinotage plantings are bush wines, known for their low yields. Kanonkop remains one of South Africa’s top estate and the restless Truter ("Man, I must always have a challenge") is now also producing a more Burgundian style of Pinotage at Bouwland.
